« Where Value-for-Money Champions Are Made »
In the universe of fine timepieces, rare materials, complex functions and often extreme price tags grab the headlines. But you don't have to be rich to become part of the ticking fascination – even in the three-figure range, you'll find astonishingly high levels of quality, company histories spanning centuries and legendary designs. We present eight good men's watch brands under 500 euros that make your entry into the world of horology an impressive and fully fledged experience.
Tissot: Swiss Made for 170 Years
Much like the VW Golf in the compact car segment, Tissot plays a leading role in the entry-level watch class. And rightly so: Founded in 1853 and now part of the Swatch Group, the brand wins the hearts of young and old alike with a spectacular lineup that covers the entire watch world, from elegant dress watches and smartwatches to brawny sports watches.
Even mechanical models such as the famous Le Locle from the T-Classic collection are available in a wide selection below the €500 mark. The Swiss cross in the logo is there for a reason: All Tissot watches, even the most affordable quartz models under €200, are made in the Alpine country to the highest quality standards and are built to last.
Hamilton: Soldiers, Cinema and Elvis Presley
Swiss precision meets American spirit: Originally from the USA, Hamilton has belonged to the Swatch Group since the 1970s, just like Tissot, and over the course of its history has achieved tremendous fame in several areas. Hamilton can claim not only the production of the legendary Khaki military watches that served the US Army during World War II, but also the longest film history of any watch brand in the world.
Since 1932, the manufacturer has appeared in more than 500 film productions. The brand is also a pioneer of electronic timekeeping, which caused a sensation in 1953 with the triangular Ventura – an extroverted model that made headlines at the time as Elvis Presley's favorite watch and is still available today. Good watch brands under 500 euros simply don't come with more character.
Certina: Tough as a Turtle
The turtle shell in the logo shows that robustness and reliability are the focus at the third Swatch brand in the group. In 1959, the manufacturer from the traditional watchmaking town of Le Locle developed the DS concept, which stands for "Double Security" and includes a particularly strong crown seal. At the same time, the movement is decoupled from the case by a rubber ring, which drastically increases shock resistance.
Clever ideas that still define Certina's lineup today. Visually, the company offers a broad spectrum ranging from rugged dive watches like the DS Action Diver to elegant companions such as the Certina DS-8 Chronometer, our favorite below the €500 mark.
Rado: Pioneer of the Ceramic Watch
The fact that Rado, the fourth brand on our list, also belongs to the Swatch Group reveals the group's dominance in affordable Swiss watchmaking – an advantage, because sharing technologies, components and development work brings considerable cost savings.
Rado's focus is on ceramic, a material that is becoming increasingly important thanks to its light weight, good skin compatibility and durability. While other good watch brands under 500 euros offer a wide selection, Rado's ceramic models only really start at €1,000. It's still worth a look, though, because the brand's iconic stainless steel models, such as the DiaStar, offer a distinctive and highly individual entry into the world of watches.
Frederique Constant: Geneva Luxury at an Affordable Price
"Accessible Luxury" is the declared mission of the premium brand Frederique Constant, founded in 1988. In its state-of-the-art Geneva manufacture, the company personally oversees every production process, right down to rigorous quality control, and delivers a level of quality you would typically only expect from higher price brackets.
Visually, collections such as the Classics, Highlife and Manufacture exude an elegance that strikes the perfect balance between understatement and exclusivity. The lineup starts just under €500, but gets even more exciting up to €1,000. Recently, the Horological Smartwatch has been turning heads by combining the design of a classic timepiece with digital functions that are integrated extremely cleverly and almost invisibly.
Junghans: Bauhaus Icons from the Black Forest
We travel from Switzerland to Germany, where Junghans is one of the biggest names. When it comes to good men's watch brands under 500 euros, the traditional Black Forest company is almost unbeatable: Not only modern solar watches, but also chronographs and the brand's iconic designs are all available below the magic price threshold.
Special mention goes to the Max Bill collection, created in 1961 by the Swiss architect of the same name and ever since the global benchmark for Bauhaus design in watchmaking. Minimalist, domed and with a wafer-thin bezel, the legendary timepiece stands out from the crowd and inspires countless new people to take an interest in watches every year. Up to €500, quartz technology dominates; for most of Junghans' hand-wound and automatic models, you'll need to spend a few hundred more.
Bruno Söhnle: A Quality Entry into the Glashütte Watch World
Nowhere in Germany is the concentration of renowned watch brands higher than in the small Saxon town of Glashütte. Bruno Söhnle proves that the local manufactures master not only spectacular luxury but also quality at affordable prices: Founded in 2000 by the Swabian entrepreneur of the same name, the brand has created an impressive range of elegant and sporty quartz and automatic watches over the past 20 years.
For €500, and sometimes noticeably less, Bruno Söhnle gives you "Made in Germany" quality, original designs and reliable technology. Collections named "Stuttgart" or "Pesaro" pick up typical Glashütte features such as the two-part panorama date and the off-center dial layout, keeping the prestigious origin present on your wrist.
[box type="success" align="" class="" width=""]If you want to experience Glashütte in all its depth, start with Bruno Söhnle and gradually work your way up to higher spheres.[/box]TW-Steel: Oversize on the Road to Success
If you're into maximum size and bold designs on your wrist, the TW-Steel lineup is worth a look. The Dutch brand, founded in 2005 by Jordy Cobelens and his father Ton, stands out from the crowd like no other: Diameters of up to 50 millimeters, huge crowns and oversized numerals give the stainless steel watches a commanding presence.
What sets TW-Steel apart from the many cheap brands and no-name manufacturers currently flooding the market with oversized watches are its solid quality standards – every detail of these large-format heavyweights is superbly finished, giving the watches a long, reliable life.
