The company was founded by Hans Wilsdorf from Kulmbach and has its headquarters in Switzerland. The name Rolex was created by Wilsdorf himself, who preferred selling his watches in Great Britain and the US and wanted to print the company name on the dial. In doing so, Wilsdorf broke with convention in 1905 and took a risk, but his plan prevailed and became a hallmark. Thanks to clever marketing and targeted gifts to sportsmen and film stars, Rolex watches became extremely popular. This is how the Cosmograph Daytona, worn by the international star Paul Newman in a film, also became a true cult object.
Cosmograph Daytona – iconic watches with petrol in their veins
Compared with the classic lines such as the Oyster Perpetual 36, the Oyster Perpetual 26 for women or the Air King, the Daytona is admittedly somewhat younger. And yet it is already rich in tradition. In 1963 the Swiss brand presented the Cosmograph for the very first time. The chronograph from the brand with the crown was developed specifically for the demands of professional motorsport and, according to Rolex itself, has motorsport in its DNA. After all, what else is the American motorsport mecca Daytona better known for?
A chronograph with superlative certification
The extremely reliable movement including the integrated tachymeter bezel allowed race drivers to measure average speeds of up to 400 miles or kilometres per hour. But not only motorsport enthusiasts and people who feel most at home on asphalt take great pleasure in the Rolex Cosmograph Daytona chronograph. This sporty timepiece is the perfect luxury chronograph for every look, every event and every occasion. Certification as a “Superlative Chronometer” attests to the exceptionally precise chronograph movement of the Cosmograph Daytona, which is available in a wide variety of material and colour combinations.
Continuous development in the typical Cosmograph Daytona design
Thanks to the large selection of Cosmograph Daytona watches, every watch lover is likely to find the right model. Bracelets and straps of stainless steel, fine leather, white, yellow or rose gold ensure the perfect fit, while clear dials with striking totalisers reminiscent of a car’s speedometer catch the eye. The Cosmograph Daytona is distinctive, dominant and at the same time elegant – a cult object from the last century that fits perfectly into modern times.
Recent model history: Cosmograph Daytona 2016 - 2023
In 2016 the Oyster Perpetual Cosmograph Daytona underwent several innovations. Visually, the Rolex chronograph with reference number 116500LN stands out for its Cerachrom monobloc tachymeter bezel. It is made of black ceramic and recalls the 1965 model, thus also aesthetically linking it to the great heritage of the Daytona’s exceptional chronograph tradition. In 2017 the Oysterflex bracelet also came to the Cosmograph Daytona. It was used directly on new versions of the watch in white, yellow or Everose gold. A diamond-set Daytona then appeared in 2018. Its case was adorned with 56 brilliant-cut diamonds. In addition, there were 36 coloured sapphires for the bezel and 11 further sapphire hour markers. Visually the most striking Daytona to date, this exquisite masterpiece was soon nicknamed the "Rainbow Daytona". Meteorite expanded the collection in 2021. The extraterrestrial material was used for the dial and, thanks to its structure, makes every Cosmograph Daytona of this kind unique. In 2023 Rolex looks back on 60 years of the Cosmograph Daytona and enthusiasts are looking forward to possible updates.

Frequently asked questions about Rolex Cosmograph Daytona
Why does the Daytona bear the name Cosmograph?
"Cosmograph" is the tradition-steeped Rolex designation for the in-house chronograph, which the Daytona has carried since the 1960s. The name Daytona refers to the famous race track in Florida and the model’s close ties to motorsport – visible in the tachymeter scale on the bezel, which lets you time average speeds.
What do nicknames such as "Tiffany", "John Mayer 2" or "Rainbow" mean on the Daytona?
These epithets come from the collectors’ community: "Tiffany" stands for the turquoise-blue dial whose hue recalls the famous turquoise of the New York jeweller, "John Mayer" for the yellow-gold Daytona with a green dial that the musician and watch collector made popular – its successor model is accordingly called "John Mayer 2". The "Rainbow" is crowned by a bezel with set gemstones running through the colours of the rainbow. All three rank among the rarest Daytona versions and are available at Uhrinstinkt.
What is special about the Daytona "Le Mans"?
The Daytona "Le Mans" honours the 24 Hours of Le Mans, with which Rolex has long been closely associated – the first model in this series appeared for the race’s 100th anniversary. Its hallmark is the highlighted "100" on the tachymeter scale. At Uhrinstinkt you will find the "Le Mans" in several versions, including the 2025 off-catalogue model that Rolex does not list in its regular catalogue.
Why is the Daytona so hard to get – and how do I buy one without a waiting list?
Demand for the Daytona has clearly exceeded production for years, which is why waiting times of several years are common at authorised dealers. At Uhrinstinkt you buy without a waiting list: the vast majority of our Daytona range is 100% unworn with a valid Rolex manufacturer’s warranty; occasional inspected Certified Pre-Owned pieces are clearly marked on the respective product. Models marked as "in stock" are ready to ship immediately, all others usually at short notice – you will find the exact delivery time on the respective product page.
Among collectors, the steel Daytona with a white dial is known as the “Panda”, and the platinum Daytona with an ice blue dial and chestnut brown bezel as the “Platona”.
