The history of Rado is inseparably linked with horological materials science. Founded in 1917 by the brothers Ernst, Fritz and Werner Schlup as a small movement-blank manufacturer in their parents' home, the Swiss brand begins producing its own wristwatches in the 1950s and, by the end of that decade, is already represented in over 61 countries. Among all the company's collections, the DiaStar was to become the most formative model: sapphire crystal and a hard-metal case mark absolute rarities in 1962 and herald the start of a fundamental change of materials in the watch industry. In 1972 the classic first shines in that gold color which is still offered today as a PVD coating in the DiaStar Original.
