From Pennsylvania to Switzerland

The brand's success story began toward the end of the 19th century with the founding of the Hamilton Watch Company in Pennsylvania. The first collection bore the name "Watch of Railroad Accuracy" and actually ensured greater safety in rail traffic. With the introduction of the company's precise timepieces, the number of railroad accidents decreased considerably, which earned the manufacturer much fame. Soon the reliable wristwatches were also part of the equipment of the US Army. In the 1930s, the Hamilton aviator watches took to the skies and the label became the official watch brand of numerous airlines. When the Second World War broke out, the manufacturer produced exclusively military watches. Amid the turmoil of war, models such as the high-precision observation watch Model 22 and the famous marine chronometer Model 21 came into being. These outstanding watch models made the company one of America's most important chronometer manufacturers. Between 1955 and 1960, Hamilton cooperated under the leadership of Helmut Epperlein with the "Vereinigte Uhrenfabriken Ersingen". This constructive collaboration finally produced the famous "Electric" in 1957: the world's first wristwatch with electric drive and balance wheel. It was precisely this watch that Elvis Presley wore in the film "Blue Hawaii" and, after filming, he acquired a model for his private use. In 1970, the manufacturer made headlines again with the first digital watch. The "Pulsar" delighted with an electronic quartz movement and a digital LED display. In 1972, the SSIH, the Swiss holding company, bought the label. Today the brand is part of the renowned Swatch Group.
