Helmut Sinn: Aerobatic Pilot and Founder of Sinn Watches

Helmut Sinn – Kunstflieger, Unternehmer, Erfinder von Spezialuhren

February 14, 2018, was not a happy day for the storied Frankfurt brand Sinn Spezialuhren: the legendary founder and pilot Helmut Sinn passed away at the remarkable age of 101. Innovative like few others, he shaped the watch industry from the 1960s onward with countless technical advances. Time to take a closer look at the moving life story of one of the most important figures in the business.

A Life Devoted to Speed and Precision

The passionate entrepreneur didn't earn the nickname "Fast Helmut" for nothing: even as a young man, he delivered top performances both in the air and on the ground. Born in 1916 in what was then the Reichsland of Alsace-Lorraine, he earned his pilot's license shortly before the outbreak of World War II and served, among other roles, as a reconnaissance pilot over Russian territory. Although he crashed there and suffered severe injuries, his enthusiasm for flying never faded, and he went on working as a flight instructor.

And whenever he wasn't up above the clouds, he proved his talent on the ground instead: as a rally driver, he took a class win in his VW Beetle at the grueling Algiers–Cape Town Rally in 1953. Frustrated by the often imprecise timekeepers used in motorsport at the time, he began developing his first dashboard clocks – where reliability and ruggedness mattered above all. This functional character would later be found in every instrument his own company produced.

Innovative Solutions Through Direct Sales

In 1961, he finally founded the company bearing his name in Frankfurt's Rödelheim district. From the outset, his business was more progressive than most other watchmakers for two reasons: on the one hand, it incorporated the latest technical developments; on the other, it sold economically through direct sales. By cutting out the middleman, it was able to offer comparatively affordable prices.

With the HS 58 caliber, Helmut Sinn introduced one of his most popular creations early in the company's history.

It featured a central minute counter and was used in every Lufthansa aircraft, as well as by the German Armed Forces. In any case, the inventor's target audience consisted primarily of pilots, such as aerobatic flyers and flight instructors. To this day, his instruments are driven first and foremost by technical perfection and, despite their stylish appearance, are not optimized for maximum beauty – an important difference from most other manufacturers.

A Company and a Life Story That Still Inspire

For decades, Helmut Sinn ran his Frankfurt company himself, until in 1994 he decided to sell it to graduate engineer Lothar Schmidt.

Formerly a design engineer at IWC, Schmidt opened a new chapter in the company's history – an expanded product range, new innovations, and a series of particularly elegant models continue to ensure steady success to this day. Despite his advanced age, Helmut Sinn's time as a businessman was far from over: in 1995, he acquired shares in the Swiss watchmaker Guinard, which had supplied Sinn for many years.

At the same time, he founded the company Jubilar-Uhren in Frankfurt am Main, which he owned until 2014. Not only his creativity and vitality, but also his passion for continuous improvement made the inventor, entrepreneur, and aerobatic pilot Helmut Sinn an outstanding figure in the watch industry. Even his farewell was anything but ordinary: at his own request, the born pilot was given an aerial burial.

What Remains Is Progress

A look at Sinn Spezialuhren's current lineup shows that the founder's spirit lives on. Above all, the wealth of in-house-developed technologies sets the brand apart in the industry.

Sinn 910 Anniversary in version 910-010, Instrument Chronographs

These innovations include, for example, DIAPAL technology: thanks to special material pairings that interact smoothly without lubrication, timepieces such as the 103 St DIAPAL achieve lasting, dependable movement accuracy.

The HYDRO principle, meanwhile, ensures these masterpieces are perfectly tailored to the needs of divers: it guarantees clear, reflection-free legibility underwater and provides maximum pressure resistance.

TEGIMENT technology is likewise aimed at professional users, since a special hardening of the surface material delivers outstanding scratch resistance – without applying a separate protective coating.

Further developments such as extremely strong magnetic field protection up to 80,000 A/m, advanced temperature resistance from -45°C to +80°C, and Ar-Dehumidifying Technology for increased functional reliability testify to Sinn's impressive pioneering spirit and are strongly reminiscent of the life of its unique founder.

Built for Every Demand: The Model Family

Variety, quality, and a rich history: Sinn's watches are by no means a pure niche product for pilots – for decades, they have won over all kinds of watch lovers. Whether you're a diver, a racing driver, or simply a technology enthusiast, today's lineup holds the right masterpiece for you.
